Dog Days of Summer

What can I say - It is the dog days of summer and HOT !!!  There are days it is so HOT we don't even go out except for a quick walk and swim in the morning.  One day though my friend from KSDS INC. puppy Milo and his sister came over for a swim.  It was later in the morning because it was to get HOT again that day.  I was kind of the underdog with Milo and his sister being much older than me but I held my ground.  It was a fun time.  Mom and Milo's Mom Debbie had lunch on the deck after we swam.  We only got a few treats and had to hang out and dry off.

Mom's garden is in full swing and she has been harvesting lots of veggies.  Miss M, Miss K and Grandma T have been coming over and canning.  One day they pickled relish and it smelled icky.

With having such a keen nose I could smell all of that vinegar cooking.  I wanted to go outside but again Mom can not understand puppy talk.  On another day they were canning cinnamon cucumbers and it smell so wonderful !!  I think Avalon got to do some cooking with them because I saw her in a apron like the girls were wearing.  I didn't know Avalon knew how to cook but she said this is her 5th summer watching Mom can veggies and kind of learned by watching.  I had to watch from the mud room behind the gate because a lot of the time they were dicing hot peppers and Mom didn't want me to eat a pepper if it fell on the kitchen floor.  On one of the days while canning Miss M, Grandma T and I went on a shopping trip.  Off to Walmart for the first time then Hy-vee.   Miss M reported that I did pretty good except I had a leaking accident at Walmart.

Mom and Dad have been doing a lot of BBQ out on the deck.  Mom said it is a summer thing.  Avalon and I get to go out and play on the deck while they are cooking and one evening we even got to have an outdoor picnic dinner.  I thought it would be something that smelled soooooo good that was on the grill but it was just our regular Science diet dog food. However, Dad had some nice treats in his pocket that we got for dessert.  Dad always makes us do commands for our treats so we have taught him right.

I am sad to report that these Dog days of Summer have come to an end for Miss M and Miss K.  They came over to our house the day before school started and we canned and had some special time together.  Mom said they will not be coming around for a couple of weeks while they settle in at school.  I am going to miss them soooo much !!  We went for a walk before they had to leave and ran into Wheel's family but no Wheels.  Wheels is my sister who is at another puppy raiser's house.  I got to meet Wheel's two legged sisters and brothers. They were very nice.

One of the things I like the most week after week is our weekend walks and swim.  Dad comes on these walks and we get a lot more free run time.  Dad likes to stop in this big fenced area and work on commands.  Boy, Avalon and I really do have him trained well.  His treats are always in his pocket and we just keep doing our commands over and over so we can get them.  Sometimes we find a ball or something and he will throw that.  There is this funny looking thing called a grate and Mom makes me walk over it when we are out on the weekends.  It has something to do with learning to walk on different kinds of surfaces?

Now that Miss M and Miss K are back in school Mom said I am now in boot camp for a couple of weeks.  I think it kind of has something to do with me not listening to her and doing my own thing but isn't that what growing up is all about ??  However, if boot camp means I get to spend more time with Mom I am all for it.  BOOT CAMP here I come !

If you live in the Omaha area remember to watch for the story the Omaha World Herald wrote about me and Milo.  Coming soon - August 29th

Miss M and Miss K have a GREAT first day of School and
a Wonderful School Year !

I just couldn't wait - I had to tell you about my adventure !

The day started out just like every other day but much earlier.  Breakfast was at 6:00 am instead of around 7:00 am but then Mom took just me for a quick bike ride right after breakfast.  I asked Avalon what was going on but she didn't know.  She was upset with me anyway because she didn't get to go.  Mom didn't go for her run around the lake like usual but instead got dressed.  Then the adventure began !

First, Mom put my kennel outside in the driveway and Miss M's Grandpa came and put it in the back of his car.  Mom had packed both of my backpacks and loaded them up and we were off with Grandma T and Grandpa D.  Since Mom can't understand puppy talk I couldn't ask her where we were going but everyone seemed excited.  They talked the whole time we were in the car.

We stopped at a house I have never been to before and you would not believe who came out the door.  Miss M and Miss K.  I was sooooo excited to see them that I leaked for them.  Mom was not to happy about that.  After Miss M took me for a quick walk around her front yard we again got back in Grandpa's car.  It was cool that Miss M's seat was right next to mine.

We drove for a long time.  Longer than I have ever been in a car.  Mom was glad there was no car sickness.  Then all of a sudden Grandpa D stopped in front of this really large building and we got out.  I kept hearing if you are not unloading please move your car so Mom made us hurry and get out.  Grandpa D then drove off.   We were at an Airport.  I have never been to one before but I heard Avalon say they are like cars, go much faster and go in the sky.  How cool !

We spent some time outside - I guess we were waiting for some two legged people and four legged friends to arrive.  While we were waiting Miss M took me to a special place outside of the Airport just for puppies.  I left them a deposit and everyone was so excited.  I just don't understand ??  After we left the special place we walked around working on commands.  Miss M is really good at commands but I heard Mom say my commands are a little rusty.
Mom thought I should go on something called a shuttle.  Kind of like a big car with a lot more seats.  We walked over and all of a sudden a funny door opened and a nice gentleman said "Hi"  Mom asked if we could come in and walk around.  He was very interested in my commands and why I was wearing a vest.  Mom talked to him while Miss M and I checked out the shuttle.

Next we met a police officer.  He is a special police officer just for the Airport.  He works outside and makes sure everyone is just unloading their cars and not parking.  I guess that is why Grandpa D hurried away after we got out of the car.  There is something called a parking garage and he went there with his car but came back to be with us.  When Grandpa D came so did some of the other people Mom was waiting for and MILO !!! with his Mom Debbie.  I remember him from swimming in our lake.
One of the two legged people named Maggie came up to us and started asking us lots of questions. I heard her say she was with the Omaha World Herald and was doing a story on us that would appear in the paper.  I have never seen a paper but will have to look for one when we get home.  I don't want to miss this.  There was also a guy named Taylor there and he had a BIG camera and was taking pictures of us.  He was really nice to us and stayed with us
after everyone else had left.
Next a nice lady named Kathy came to us and said she was ready to take us on our tour of the Airport.  I heard Mom say we had to have permission from her to be able to go through certain areas of the Airport.  She told us where we would be going and that some nice TSA police would be talking to us about how to go through something called a check point.  Sounded a little scary when she was telling us because alarms could be going off.  I was wondering what that would sound like and found out just a few minutes later.

We were then off on our adventure.  Everyone followed us up to the second floor.  Milo and his Mom and me and Mom took the stairs while some others took these funny stairs that moved.  We are not allowed on them because our nails might get stuck.  When we got to the check point a nice TSA police officer came and talked to us on how to walk through the big scanner and what we needed to put in the baskets for the other scanner.  Milo and me really didn't have to take anything off but the two legged people had to put their shoes, purses/backpacks, cameras and phones in the baskets.   They even had to put my treat pouch in the basket.
My Mom said Milo should go first since he is older and could show me how it is done.  I watched with Miss M then after he went through we did.  There were a lot of people watching us so I wanted to make sure I was being a BIG girl.

Milo and me got to practice again. We went back around and though the scanner but this time the alarm went off.  It scared me a little but I was trying very hard to be brave so I did not make a fuss. When the alarm goes off the TSA police have to pat us down to make sure everything is OK. Everyone was very nervous when she bent down to pat me since I sometimes get so excited when people pet me I leak.  I was still being a BIG girl and made sure everything stayed where it was suppose to be.  I heard Grandma T say she was ready if anything was to happen with special wipes.

Last, we walked around the Airport and again outside to visit the special pet area.  We had been inside for some time and I was glad to "Hurry up".  Grandpa D left and got the car and off we went but not home but to Grandpa/Grandma's house.  There was a surprise for Miss M and Miss K.

I turned 5 months in August and Miss M and Miss K will turn 10 and 13 in August.   We had a puppy and people Birthday party.  There was a special puppy cake along with a birthday cake.  I have seen cake before but never with sticks and fire on top.  They even sang a funny song then blew out the sticks.  There were gifts for Miss M, Miss K and me.  I felt sorry for everyone else because they didn't get any gifts.  It was really fun but I was getting sleepy from all of the excitement and was ready for a nap however, that was not to be.

Soon after we got home I did go to my kennel and lay down but shortly after the TV started making a noise like an alarm and it said to take cover.  A tornado was on the ground close to where we live. Mom, Avalon and me went downstairs until the alarm stopped.  That was kind of scary.  I hope something like that doesn't come here again !!  Avalon told me our two legged sister Aunna is really afraid of tornadoes and she hoped she wasn't at work at her new job as a nurse so she could take cover.

Watch for my story in the Omaha World Herald on August 29

Happy Birthday
to two of my favorite two legged friends !!
